How do I know if I need psychotherapy or counseling?

People often ask themselves , "Do I really need counseling or therapy? " I can handle my problems on my own...can't I? Should I?"

When you are going through a difficult time it can be hard to determine whether or not you need to speak with a therapist or a counselor. One moment you might find yourself desperate to talk with someone right away, but you might find yourself feeling all right the next day. Usually the issues that you are facing rarely go away so easily and most likely will cycle right back, leaving you thinking that maybe it would have been helpful if you have booked that appointment after all. trauma emocional

Even today, in our information overloaded and high technology century, many people still fear the stigma attached to seeking professional help, because of the myth that only "crazy" people need psychotherapy or counseling.

In reality, psychotherapy or counseling is nothing to be afraid of. Just think about it. You usually get advice from your parents, friends, or other family members. The only difference with psychotherapy or counseling is that you'll be actually talking to an open-minded, well-trained person. You will have the undivided attention of a professional counselor who has nothing to gain in the decisions you make - someone whose only agenda is to help you feel better, be well and make better decisions for yourself. What do you have to lose?

When Should I Talk to Someone?

There's no easy, one-size-fits-all answer to the question, "do I really need therapy?" Most of us feel that asking for a help can make us feel incredibly vulnerable. Many of us use denial as a coping mechanism and pretend that they are "OK" and that the problems don't really exist, when we don't talk about them.

But making the decision to talk with a psychotherapist or a counselor about the things you are going through, the thoughts you are having and the feelings you are experiencing has the potential to give you deeper insights, greater understanding and strength and explore room for change and healing.

The questions listed below should help you make your decision.

Just take a moment and answer to these questions honestly:

  • Has your life gone through a major change? Or even a small one that seems to be having a big impact on how you feel?

  • Are you finding it difficult to talk with friends and family? They don't seem to quite "get it";

  • Are people around you are tired of listening to your troubles; or you don't want to burden them with your problems?

  • Does everyone around you seem to think you are coping but inside you feel like you are barely holding it together?

  • Are your important relationships being negatively impacted by your mood?

  • Is your work or school being affected by your problems?

  • Are you having trouble stopping your mind from racing? Or are you having trouble making decisions?

  • Would you rather curl up under the covers and not face most days?

  • Are you feeling anxious, depressed or frustrated most of the time?

If you answered "yes" to any or all of the questions then maybe it would be helpful booking an appointment with our trained specialists and seeing if counseling or psychotherapy may benefit you.
